Replacement windows Window replacement

What are the signs that tell you it's time for new windows?

High quality, made-to-measure windows that have been well maintained should last for 20 years or more. If your windows are old or you're unsure when they were fitted, there are some signs to look out for that tell you it's time to replace your windows.

Signs to look forChecks you can do
DraughtsFeel around the frames for air movement
DamageDo they leak or can you hear external noise? If so the seals may be broken
Functionality problemsCheck for difficulty opening, closing staying open, sticking or locking
Condensation on the inside of the windowsCheck a bedroom window first thing in the morning
Poor appearanceIs there yellowing of uPVC windows or cracking of timber frame windows?
High energy billsIs your home expensive to heat in relation to its size?

How much do replacement windows cost?

Costs can vary greatly for both the windows and installation, especially when buying online. Therefore, it is important to be aware of the potential dangers of buying low cost or off the shelf replacement units:

  • Low quality uPVC can turn yellow over time. This will reduce the value of your property and make it harder to sell.
  • Low quality wood replacement windows may be more prone to cracks and rotting. This would dramatically reduce the lifespan and increase long-term replacement costs.

Poorly installed windows can be responsible for:

  • Draughts that can cause ill health and sleepless nights.
  • Heat loss that can lead to spiralling energy bills and increase your carbon footprint. In some cases badly installed windows can increase the amount of heat lost rather than reduce it.
  • Moisture leaks and damp can in extreme cases potentially cause serious damage to your property.

It's so important to be able to assess the quality of the materials before you buy. This is why at Everest we offer a seven day price guarantee. If you can find the same quality product at a better price we will instantly cut our prices to match.

Finding a well suited home window style

Choosing the style of your replacement double glazing can be one of the toughest decisions to make when buying windows. Many factors need to be considered, these include:

  • The age or period of the property: How will different types of windows complement it? Windows that are well suited will have the potential to increase the value of the property and the ability to re-sell.
  • What styles of windows look particularly good on your neighbours' homes or similar properties?
  • If your budget permits it you should replace all your windows at once for uniformity of appearance. This can also help to increase the value of your property.
  • It may be worth asking your neighbours if they are also thinking about replacement windows as uniformity over several adjacent properties can also help to increase value. Everest also gives greater discounts for buying in bulk so it's a win-win.

Everest tilt and turn replacement windows are available in uPVC, with a choice of double or triple glazing.

What's the difference between double and triple glazing?

If they are both made from the same material and to the same quality standard then the triple glazing should be around 20-30% more energy efficient. However, there are lots of variables that can compromise the comparison between double and triple glazing:

  • Correctly spaced gaps between the panes.
  • Type of gas or coating used as the insulator.
  • Type and quality of the materials.
  • Level of tailored manufacturing to your home.

This means that it's possible for some lower quality triple glazing to be less energy efficient than good quality double glazing. Fundamentally replacing the windows in your home is a long term investment and buying cheap can ultimately end up costing you much more in the long run.
